South Bay Favorites Tony Accardo March 18, 2025
Nestled along the picturesque coastline of the South Bay, Hollywood Riviera is one of the most coveted neighborhoods in Southern California. With its stunning ocean views, European-inspired charm, and peaceful atmosphere, it’s no surprise that homebuyers are drawn to this area. But few know the rich history behind its development—one that began with a single visionary, Clifford Reid.
Clifford Reid was a natural-born salesman and a successful real estate developer who saw opportunity where others saw empty land. Originally from Oregon, Reid moved to Los Angeles in the early 1900s and quickly made a name for himself in real estate. His ambition and keen business sense led him to recognize the untapped potential of the South Bay coastline, particularly in the foothills between Redondo Beach and Torrance.
During the 1920s, the South Bay was still largely undeveloped, with vast stretches of open land and agricultural fields. But Reid saw something different—he envisioned a luxurious, European-inspired community perched on the bluffs, offering breathtaking ocean views and a serene coastal lifestyle. He named it Hollywood Riviera, combining the glitz of Hollywood with the refined elegance of the French and Italian Rivieras.
Reid’s development plans were grand. In 1927, he invested millions into transforming the area into a prestigious residential neighborhood. He promoted Hollywood Riviera as a retreat for the affluent, targeting movie stars, industry executives, and wealthy Angelenos who sought a seaside escape without straying too far from Los Angeles.
The homes he developed reflected the architectural trends of the time—Spanish-style estates with red tile roofs, stucco exteriors, and lush landscaping, all designed to evoke the ambiance of the Mediterranean coast. The streets were carefully laid out to maximize ocean views, and the community was marketed as an exclusive haven for the elite.
One of Reid’s most significant marketing tactics was to exclude the word "Torrance" from the development’s name. He feared that potential buyers would associate it with industrial areas rather than an upscale residential retreat. His marketing efforts were largely successful, drawing attention from high-profile buyers and setting the stage for Hollywood Riviera to become one of the most desirable communities in the South Bay.
Although Clifford Reid’s original vision faced some challenges—such as the Great Depression slowing development—his dream for Hollywood Riviera lived on. Over the decades, the neighborhood continued to grow, maintaining its reputation as a charming and highly desirable coastal enclave.
Today, Hollywood Riviera remains a gem in the South Bay, celebrated for its unique blend of history, architecture, and breathtaking scenery. Its tree-lined streets, vibrant community, and proximity to the beach make it a prime location for those seeking a balance of luxury and laid-back coastal living.
